I’ve been fortunate to turn my vacation getaway into a pandemic hideaway. I traveled to Tulum, Mexico, pre-covid, and decided to stay indefinitely.

While many places still have their borders closed to travelers, other places have embraced the new normal and welcomed back visitors. Some areas of Mexico have taken the steps needed to ensure that tourism continues.

With a diverse landscape ranging from mountainous regions to the Caribbean ocean, fortunately for me, I’ve found myself in the ultimate destination. This, by no means, is to promote unnecessary travel but to keep your dream and inspiration alive.

As you dream about your post-covid travel, here are some of the best destinations in Mexico to consider!

Tulum

This is my current hideaway. If I had one first-world complaint, it’s that during the high season (December to March and pre-covid), it is overwhelmingly crowded. Especially along the hotel beach strip. Along this strip is where you’ll find gorgeous hotels that second as architectural art. Outside of the high season, this small city in the Yucatan becomes synonymous with the ultimate beach vacation.

Zihuatanejo

Situated on the Pacific side, the city is known for its bay, where it’s mostly lined with beaches. Once a sleepy fishing town is now a popular beach destination made infamous by the movie The Shawshank Redemption. In the movie, the protagonist, Andy, dreamt of and escaped to Zihuatanejo. Although the tourism industry seemed to have boomed overnight, the city has retained its historic charm for the most part. Cobblestones still pave the narrow streets of downtown lined with restaurants and boutique shops.

Todos Santos

Located in Mexico’s Baja California Sur, Todos Santos is only 45 minutes drive away from the overwhelmingly popular Los Cabos but has managed to keep a small town, laid-back vibe. This hidden gem was off the grid until 1984, when a road was paved from Cabos San Lucas. Here, the Pacific Ocean, Sierra Laguna mountain range, and desert meet to create a natural paradise. You’ll find world-class beaches here with mostly quaint and charming architecture. As beautiful as Tulum is, I would love to visit Todos Santos. The absence of major beachside resorts and watching the sunset on the horizon is incredibly appealing to me.

Bays of Huatulco

If you’re into water activities such as snorkeling, diving, and fishing, then this is the place for you. Located on the Pacific Coast, this region harbors nine bays with 36 pristine beaches for you to explore. Although development has sprung across this region, which used to be a cluster of fishing villages, it has maintained much of its natural attraction.

Sayulita

With the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains as its backdrop and strong, reliable waves on its central beach, Sayulita is a surfers’ Eden. Not so long ago, this was still a sleepy fishing village. Since the ’70s, travelers started to descend upon this stretch of dense rainforest and wild beaches to open up cute little restaurants and cafes.

To have the option to stay on the hills in a charming Airbnb or close to the beach in a boutique hotel - you have the best of both worlds.
